The Electoral Commission has rejected nominating Democratic Party President Norbert Mao as candidate for the Gulu municipality seat allegedly because he(Mao) is not a registered voter. Mao was bedridden in hospital at the time of the most recent registration. But he holds an old voter ID which was rejected by the Electoral Commission. Acholi Times understands a team of lawyers is working on the instruction of Mao to find away around this dramatic developments. Acholi Times further understands that when Mao was discharged from hospital he contacted the late Internal Affairs Minister Aronda Nyakairima to register for a national identity card. Nyakairima reportedly promised to have Mao register but the minister died before he could resolve the matter. Mao, reports say, subsequently contacted the minister of state for internal affairs, James Baba who wrote a letter instructing that Mao be registered but this letter was rejected. Mao is expected to have a rally this afternoon at Awere grounds in Gulu to address his supporters. We will keep you posted on subsequent developments on this story.
