Gulu Arch Bishop John Baptist Odama has asked Government not to evict the people of Apaa from a piece of land claimed by both Amuru and Adjumani district, arguing that people are more important than animals.
“If we are talking about having a choice between giving land or space for animals and for human beings, my option is first give land for human beings,’ said Odama while addressing residents of the area during a peace prayer last week.
‘‘Human beings have a right over land given by God,’ the Gulu Arch Bishop added.
Odama told the residents that God gave man land and made him the master of all animals, birds and fish.
‘‘Now how can you put the animals above God’s creature, “wondered Odama.
He condemned the forceful opening of the Amuru/Adjumani border in September last year which left several people injured and others arrested after a scuffle broke out.
Bishop Odama received petition from the community demanding that for a catholic mission under his guidance. They also asked for a school, church and hospital to add onto Apaa Health centre II which they already have.
Odama welcomed the petition but challenged the residents to also contribute towards their own development and every development of their area.
Odama made an on the spot launch of a fundraising for Apaa Chapel. Army member of parliament and official of the Prime Minister’s office, Major General Julius Oketta pledged 2million shillings while Kilak County MP Gilbert Olanya pledged 20 Bags of cement for the church.
The peace prayer follows the forceful demarcation of the disputed borderline between Amuru and Adjumani in September last year which left 20 residents injured and their area MP Gilbert Olanya arrested.
