An Albino boy whose story was broken by Acholi Times three years ago subsequently leading him to get a sponsors has vowed to work hard, become a doctor and save fellow Albinos.
Emmanuel Kica now 16 and in primary seven at St Kizito Bidati Primary school in Nwoya is the only Albino boy in primary school in the district.
Kica told Acholi Times today that he is determined to join Secondary School next year without fail. He says he wants to become a doctor and help Albino’s in Uganda.
Challenges
Amos Ocaya, the Deputy Headteacher of St Kizito Bidati Primary school told Acholi Times that Kica is a hard working boy. But the teacher adds that for the last three months, Kica has been trekking three kilometers from home to school since his bicycle got spoilt in an accident.
“He got some minor accident and his bicycle got spoilt. We are happy that he survived because he has a challenge with his eyes,” said the deputy headteacher Amos Ocaya.
The 16 year boy who treks from Owak village, Ceke-ward, to Bidati Primary school says that the hot sun greatly affects his delicate skin.
Kica also used to face stigmatization from his fellow pupils and the community. That has since reduced.
“I counseled the whole school about stigmatizing Kica and I can ensure you that there is no stigma on him,” said Ocaya.
Help For Kica
Kica whose name in Luo means ‘‘mercy’’ received a pair of long sleeved shirts and two trousers from the Galaxy Poets of Northern Uganda, an arts youth movement group to help cover his delicate skin from the hot sun.
Unlike other youngsters at St Kizito Bidati Primary school, Kica is allowed by the school management to put on long sleeved shirts and trousers to protect his skin.
The Grey town Lions Club of Newzeland also bought Kica a pair of eye glasses to enable him see well. Before he got the glasses, he used to seat near the blackboard to see well what the teacher was writing. But with the glasses, he can now seat anywhere in the class and is still be able to see well.
What Kica’s Father Says
Bazil Ojera, Kica’s father says that he is grateful for the supports being given to his son but is worried about the safety of his son because in some parts of Uganda, Albinos are killed for their body parts.
“I hear that Albinos in other parts of Uganda are killed and their body parts sold for wealth. This has always caused me fear. It worries me,’’ Ojera told Acholi Times.
Emmanuel Kica was born in 2000 to the late Ajero Nighty. His mother passed away and is now being looked after by his stepmother Nightly Labol and his father Bazil Ojera.
