Uganda Peoples Congress (Jimmy Akena faction) has said it will discipline its Youth League Chairperson, Brenda Atim Kinyera and former Kole woman Member of Parliament Ruth Achieng for supporting the NRM candidate in Omoro when their UPC has its own candidate.
Kinyera and Achieng are accused by party officials of soliciting votes for NRM candidate Catherine Lamwaka.
The Jimmy Akena UPC faction is reported to have fielded Marie Shaka Lapolo as its candidate for woman member of parliament.
But in a recent campaign visit in Omoro, the duo (Kinyera and Achieng) instead campaigned for NRM’s Lamwaka.
The head of communication and media for the Akena UPC faction, Andrew Omara told Acholi times today, Friday, that Kinyera and Achieng’s actions contravened the party constitution.
Omara cited article 3 sub section 1 and 2 of the party constitution which he claims states that no party member should solicit for votes against its members contesting for an elective position.
Omara said the party’s disciplinary committee will conduct an investigation on the two members.
Atim and Achieng, while in Bobi Sub County in Omoro when president Museveni was campaigning for NRM party members, told voters in the district to vote for Catherine Lamwaka, the NRM candidate for the woman parliamentary seat.
Charles Dickens Olak, the Omoro district UPC party chairman in an interview with Acholi Times on Wednesday this week said he did not recogise Lapolo Mariea Shaka as the UPC candidate in Omoro.
Olak further said he had heard reports that Jimmy Akena, the faction leader of the UPC wants to visit Omoro. He warned Mr Akena against visiting the district.
Omara however rubbished Olak’s claim saying Lapolo is the UPC party candidate.
The confusion comes only a few days to voting which is slated for Monday next week.
