Democratic Party (DP) in Acholi sub region has announced that it has embarked on a recruitment drive for new members in preparation for the 2021 general elections.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by Gulu DP Chairman Kerobino Uma at the party’s offices located along school road in Pece division in Gulu town.
Mr Uma said the plan to embark on a recruitment drive was reached in a recent closed-door meeting with party President Norbert Mao.
Mr Uma said the recruitment drive will start in Gulu municipality then proceed to Aswa. And that similar exercises will be held in the other districts of the Acholi region. The region has seven districts. Uma added that they expect to achieve their target by June this year.
Uma, a known longtime supporter of DP also dismissed reports that DP is on the verge of collapse due to internal wrangles. The DP is currently mired in wrangles with a faction led by Mukono municipality MP led by Betty Nambooze challenging Mao’s leadership of the party. Mr Mao has accused the Nambooze group of having sectarian motives. The DP’s strong hold is in the Buganda region.
The DP recruitment, according to Justine Obol Simpleman, a DP member and councilor for Laroo in the Gulu municipal council, the recruitment will target youth at the grassroots levels. Obol said the party’s motive is to build strong structures at the grassroots.
