Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) supporters were yesterday dispersed by police in Gulu after they assembled at the office of the Gulu woman MP Betty Aol Ochan which also serves as the FDC office in Gulu.
The office is located along Ring Road in Gulu Municipality.
Among the FDC top officials who had gathered at the office was Kelly Komakech the Gulu District FDC spokesperson and LC3 Chairman-elect for Pece Divsion and Moses Abonga the Laroo Division Chairperson LC III.
Betty Aol Ocan the Woman MP for Gulu District was not at her office at the time the police deployed at the office.
The police officers led by the Gulu district police commander Martin Okoyo came and ordered the FDC officials to leave saying they were holding an unlawful assembly.
“You know very well that this prayer of yours was banned by the court. I call on you to leave as soon as possible and go away,” Okoyo said.
The police commander told the FDC supporters to go to their respective homes instead of gathering at their party office.
Okoyo who camped at the Woman MP’s Office for Hours told Kelly Komakech the Gulu FDC party spokesperson that their gathering was illegal.
However Kelly Komakech told the press that FDC will continue to hold their protest prayers whether the police wants it or not.
“We shall have to hold the prayers whether they [police] want it or not. It is our right to pray. We cannot be intimidated,’’ said Komakech.
Komakech however jumped on a boda-boda motorcycle and sped off flashing a V-sign.
The deputy Chief Justice, Steven Kavuma issued an interim court order stopping the FDC from carrying out activities in line with the party’s defiance campaign.
Lawyers including their boy—the Uganda Law Society—have criticized the deputy chief justice saying his interim order was uncalled for.
The FDC protests are because of the party’s dissatisfaction with the outcome of the February 18 presidential election and their demand for an independent audit of the election results.
