Local leaders in Gulu municipality have sought protection from police following mounting threats on them from street children commonly known as Aguu and burglars.

The quest for police protection follows a recent attack by Aguu against the Industrial Area LC1 Chairperson, Jino Otti.

The angry youth armed with sticks and stones claimed a vigilante recruited by the LC1 Chairman to check on crime was harassing them.

Alfred Ojok, the Tegwana Parish local chairperson II disclosed on Friday that they are living in fear for their life following the attack against their colleague.

Mr Ojok asked police to intensify security patrols since local leaders do not own guns to protect themselves.

Margaret Ayaa, the councilor three representing women of Vanguard Parish in Pece division revealed that the burglars last week cut his daughter`s hands in a suspected retaliation after they were punished for perpetrating crime in the area.

Walter Omona Kato, the LC1 for Cubu A and B village in Layibi Division said he too is living in fear of being attacked by burglars and Aguu.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River region police spokesperson says police have intensified patrols in areas were the local leaders feel vulnerable to attacks by burglars and Aguu.

Last week 50 suspected street children suspected to be Aguu arrested from Gulu municipality are remanded to Gulu Central prisons.
