    Three Prisoners in Acholi Benefit From Presidential Pardon

    Three prisoners in the Acholi sub-region are among the 79 prisoners in 15 government prisons across the country who were freed under an early January presidential instrument of pardon.

    Under Article 121(1) (a) of the 1995 Ugandan constitution, the President may on the advice of the advisory committee exercise his right to pardon any person convicted of an offense, a pardon either free or subject to lawful conditions.

    In a letter dated January 4, 2022, President Yoweri Museveni said he has pardoned 79 prisoners on public health and humanitarian grounds.

    The prisoners pardoned by President Museveni and were locked up in prisons in Acholi sub-region are Aron Ego who was serving jail time at Nwoya Central Government Prison in Nwoya District, Hellen Obote, and Santina Akidi, who were both behind bars at Gulu Central Government Prison in Gulu City.

    Other prisoners freed were locked up at Loro Central Government Prisons for various offences also benefited from the

    The president also freed three UPDF officers who were in jail for various offences and a Venezuela national, Ms Doralys Rodriguez Fagundez who was jailed for 22 years at Luzira Maximum Security Prions for drug trafficking.
