At least 26 of the 90 freshian cows distributed under the Operation Wealth Creation to dairy farmers in Acholi sub region have died, according to officials.

The animals are reported to have died under unclear circumstances under the care of the beneficiaries.

This has cost the government around Shs40 Million in losses.

Col Francis Acoka Ongom, the coordinator of the programme in Acholi sub-region says the worst performing district is Agago where 24 of the 26 cows died after being distributed to beneficiaries.

Col Acoka blamed the problem on the beneficiaries over what he described as poor management practices.

According to Acoka, “The farmers opted to herd the milk producing cattle like the local breed.”

Meanwhile in Gulu, two of the 50 heifers died.

One died during delivery while the other was killed during transportation to the beneficiary.

Col Acoka said it was upon the local leaders to mobilise farmers so that what is delivered is not wasted.

Under the Operation Wealth Creation program, farmers also received 100, 000 tons of maize, 80,000 tons of bean seeds, five tons of rice, 10,000 banana suckers and 200,000 coffee seedlings have been supplied in Acholi sub-region.
