A section of members of the Democratic Party (DP) in Gulu have accused the party leadership of failure to organise party primaries to elect flag bearers for various political offices.

The party members accuse the DP leadership of resorting to picking candidates instead of primary elections which they say is undemocratic.

Speaking at press conference at Kakanyero hotel yesterday evening, the party members comprising of lawyer Komakech Henry Kilama who is interested in the Gulu municipality seat, Jacob Candano who is eyeing the Pece Division Chair and Robert Odongakulu who is aspiring to be Gulu mayor.

Komakech Henry Kilama claims that the DP’s National executive committee did not treat him fairly because he was ready for a primary election with Norbert Mao, the Democratic Party president.

Kilama said he has suspended his membership to the DP as a result of how he claims the party has treated him.

“For now I have temporarily suspended my subscription to DP on principal but I remain a sympathizer of the party, “Kilama said.

On his part, Robert Odongakulu said the DP leadership had wanted him to contest for Layibi division Chair but he declined saying he prefers the mayoral seat.  The DP national executive has reportedly chosen Pece Division Chair, Geoffrey Otim as its flag bearer in the Gulu mayoral race.

Umar Kerobino, the DP chairman Gulu district said whatever decision  the party took is in the interest of the party.

“They are free to take their own independent decision but the party is not against this people, the national executive committee, the national council of the party for the good of the party can  choose its  candidate besides using primary elections, “ Uma said
