Gulu residents who live near the town’s abattoir have complained of filth at the facility.

The residents have decried the poor state of hygiene at the abattoir due to the poor state of waste management disposal.

Akello Oliver who runs a hotel adjacent to the abattoir told Acholi Times that her business is grounded because of the filth that flows from the abattoir.

‘‘You see maggots floating from running water coming to my restaurant whenever it rains. This is irritating to my customers and has repelled them away whenever they come for food in my restaurant,’’ Akello said.

Daniel Oola, another Gulu town resident who lives near the abattoir said they are constantly assailed by a foul smell of rotten animal wasted.

Oola said they are at risk of contracting diseases like cholera and dysentery.

Some workers at the abattoir who preferred to remain unnamed for fear of being reprimanded by their bosses said they work in filthy conditions.

They said the slaughterhouse lacks an incinerator hence animal remains are burned in the open.

John Oola Gulu, the Gulu Municipality deputy town clerk however said they have plans of constructing a multi-billion abattoir to replace the old one. He urged

Oola added that four acres of land has been bought at Layibi Techo in Gulu municipality to construct a new abattoir when they receive funding from World Bank.

The old abattoir located in the middle of Gulu town was constructed by a German veterinary doctor in 1963.

It was meant to accommodate only 12 animals but it currently accommodates 50 due to increased demand for beef and other animal products.
