Lady Justice Margret Mutonyi, the Gulu resident High Court on Wednesday sentenced a 21-year-old woman to a 20-year-jail term for killing her brother-in-law.

Joyce Ayat, a resident of Lwala village, Lakwana Sub County in Gulu district was charged and convicted with the gruesome murder of Alfred Odongo.

On the fateful day, Odongo picked a quarrel with his brother one Richard Olanya.

Prosecution led by Patrick Omia told court that on January 1, 2014 from Lawala village, Ayat and her husband Olanya violently attacked the deceased with deadly weapons.

Omia told court that Olanya who is also the biological brother of the deceased attacked Odongo with an axe.

Omia told Justice Mutonyi that Olanya used an axe to cut the brother on the head while Ayat hit the deceased with a club during a squabble over their land boundary. According to prosecution, Odongo suffered a broken skull.

Olanya admitted to the offence and was convicted on his own plea He was sentenced to a 20 year jail term by Justice John Eudes Kateirima in September 11, 2014.

In the medical document tendered in court, Dr Onen Olwedo, an anaesthologist, who performed the postmortem, found Odongo suffered a broken skull leading to the damage of his brain tissues.

Vitorino Bua, 54, the clan leader of Draka Ongada clan described Olanya and his wife as a violent couple who do not deserce leniency. Bua asked court to give Ayat the same punishment as it had done to her husband.

Justice Mutonyi slapped Ayat with a 20-year-jail term saying she cannot depart from what Justice Keitirima ordered Ayat’s husband to serve for killing his brother.
