Amuru Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Bilak Jal-Moro, has said several government schools in the district are unlikely to re-open when the new term begins due to land wrangles.

Jal-Moro explained that families whose grandparents gave land to the school are ‘‘reclaiming’’ back the land.

According to the RDC, the families are demanding that the ownership of the land be reverted back to them on grounds that they are against the offer by their forefathers.

The affected schools, according to the RDC, are; Otwe Public School, Obe- Abic Primary School and Pabbo Senior Secondary School. The RDC said the challenge the district is facing is that the offer of the land to the schools was not documented.

Other institutions affected by similar demands are health centres and churches which are locked up in bitter fights over land. The families want the facilities to vacate the land in question so they can reposes it.

Last week St Luke Church in Nwoya, built in the 1990’s, was closed over a conflict over land on which the church sits.
