Gulu municipality has acquired land that will be the home to a new abattoir which will have the capacity to handle the slaughter of over 500 animals per day.

This was recently revealed by Gulu Mayor George Labeja in an interview with Acholi Times in his office in Gulu town.

Labeja under whose leadership Gulu municipality emerged as the best performing municipality among the 14 municipalities under the World Bank funded Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) says the municipal will now focus on developing critical infrastructure to accelerate Gulu’s city ambition.

The mayor said Gulu municipal authorities have already acquired land where a modern abattoir will be constructed. He added that construction of the new abattoir will commence this financial year in a land which is located at Aringo Rwot in Layibi division 2 kilometers outside of Gulu town.

The abattoir, according to the mayor, will have proper waste management, running water, a standby generator and large volume fridges with the capacity to huge amounts of beef.

Currently, Gulu relies on just one abattoir to meet the need of its over one hundred thousand people. The abattoir is filthy with a foul smell, no proper waste management and fridges to store beef leftovers.

Another infrastructural project the municipal intends to begin work on this financial year, the Mayor said, includes the construction of a bus terminal which will be constructed at the Junction along Gulu-Juba Road.

The Mayor also revealed that 16 primary schools in Gulu municipality will also be supported to improve their infrastructure to accommodate the increasing number of pupils. He said the money for the development of the primary schools will come from the World Bank supported Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID).
