Simon Opio aka General Tuk, a notorious thug  has been arrested by police in Nwoya district. Opio was netted in an operation led by police with support from locals.

Nwoya Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Beatrice Akello told a press briefing in Gulu on Friday that Opio was arrested in Koch Goma Sub County, Nwoya district. Opio was for a long time a wanted man for numerous crimes linked to him.

Akello said Opio was wanted for alleged rape, theft and arson ‘‘all over northern Uganda.’’

The RDC said arresting Opio aka Gen Tuk was difficult because he moves from ”place to place” since he is a wanted man in Acholi and Lango.

“Opio is wanted for many crimes. The residents in Nwoya tipped us that he was around. As we were mobilizing for support to arrest him, he almost escaped,” the Nwoya RDC told journalists.

“He was raping women everywhere he was going. With his arrest, women are now free to move around,’’ Akello said.

“Everybody was concerned about him [Opio] and I received a number of calls by residents over his misconducts. The residents almost lost trust in me because it became so difficult to arrest him. He [Opio] is so slippery and can escape easily if not handled well.”

Opio, aka General Tuk is alleged to have rapped an old woman in April this year in a village near Alokolum seminary school. He is also wanted by police for trespass after he allegedly climbed the wall and got into Christ the King Primary Teachers College in Gulu.

Police also want him for allegedly burning huts in Nwoya district and threatening violence against women in Layibi industrial area in April this year.

After his arrest Opio was transferred to Gulu Central Police station. He was before court  in Gulu today (Monday) and remanded to  Gulu Central Prison.
