Nwoya Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Beatrice Akello Okori has asked communities in the district to desist from taking the law in their hands.
Akello’s remarks were triggered by what she said are increased cases of revenge attacks in the district.
The RDC who was addressing the press in Gulu last week said property, life and close to 70 huts have been torched in Nwoya in revenge attacks since the beginning of this year.
According to the RDC, the revenge attacks, is due to people taking the law into their own hands.
Last week 55 huts were burnt and 2 goats killed in a revenge attack in Nwoya district after a man identified as Odong Charles Okwera reportedly died from his in-law’s place in Alero. Odong’s relatives suspected he had been poisoned by his mother-in-law and attacked her home, torching huts. A post mortem report indicates that the deceased was hit on the chest with a hard object.
In May, 21 huts were burnt and one person was killed in a revenge attack in Koch Goma Sub County, also in Nwoya district.
Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa region police spokesperson Aswa warned that the people who take the law into their hands by burning huts will be charged with arson.
‘‘This is not the first time people are taking the law into their hands. It is a chronic disease in this region that every time something happens people think of going to revenge, which is really not good, the law is there to handle such situations,’’ Okema said.
Paul Okeny, the Alero sub county LC3 condemned the increase in the revenge attacks. He asked that offended parties to use the law to address their grievances.
