Six million shillings has been raised in a Saturday run in Gulu aimed at raising money for buying a cancer machine for Nsambya hospital in Kampala, the Gulu Rotary President Rose Atim told Acholi Times today.

About 300 people took part in the 5km and 10 kms run organised by Gulu Rotary.  Each participant bought a ticket at 20,000 shillings.

Atim said as organisers of the run they had had expected about 100,000. It was the first such run in Gulu.

The 6 million will go towards purchasing the cancer machine—a LINAC—which costs 500 million shillings.

The machine is used for treating tumour cancer without affecting the surrounding tissues.

The Rotary Club President praised those who took part in the run and Centenary Bank and Pepsi for supporting the fight against cancer.

The Acholi Khadir, Sheikh Musa Khelil was the chief runner. He officially flagged off the event from the TAKS centre in Gulu down.

Sheik Khelil called upon the upon Acholi people to join the fight against cancer which he termed as an epidemic in the country.

Other public officials who participated in the run included the Aswa region police commander Kwanya Wilson and his deputy Tom Aziku Zata.
