Nineteen suspected robbers were on Thursday night arrested in Gulu, the police said on Friday.

Among the arrested are 17 men and 2 ladies.

The suspects were arrested over allegations of aggravated robbery in Layibi division in Gulu municipality.

The suspects, according to police spokesman Jimmy Patrick Okema were all cramped in one grass thatched hut in Layibi Go-Down in Layibi division Gulu municipality.

Aswa region police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema said Layibi Go-down where the suspects were arrested is a ‘‘black spot for criminals.’’

Okema said the police recovered tools used by the suspects to break in house and recovered suspected stolen items.

The recovered items included a bag full of knives, hammers, a spade, three speakers, four phones, a zoom digital recorder, a DVD player, numerous pair of shoes and clothes in addition to a bicycle and opium.

The police spokesman said the suspects will be charged with aggravated robbery, theft and being in possession of opium.

On the same night of the arrests in  Go- Down, 22 youth were also arrested  in Tegwana parish. Police say they recovered opium from the youth.

Last week 32 suspects were arrested from various parts of  Gulu municipality which has recently witnessed an increase in acts of criminality, mainly  house break-ins, robbery and night attacks on revelers and other road users within the municipality.

Criminals are free human capitals. Locking human in prison alone does not change them nor benefit the community, but making them learn what they missed is another e.g. arrested from Opium can become a good community leader or hardworking; arresting stealing make them productive; etc

Mr.Okema, as Police Spokesman and Community Security Officer. Why can’t you do more on what I think the stated above are the major causes of Crime in Gulu and Acholi Region at large?
