Police boss Gen Kale Kayihura today afternoon flew to Kitgum over increased gun related murders in the district.

Gen Kayihura’s Kitgum visit comes two days after the latest gun murder in Kitgum in which Tony Olanya, 63, a former Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) official was shot dead in his home in Ayul A village in Pager Division in Kitgum municipality.

The motive of the murder is yet unknown neither had the police, by press time, arrested any suspects.

In recent months, Kitgum has witnessed a string of gun- related murders.

Mr Olanya has variously been described by those who know him as ‘‘an unassuming and enterprising man.’’

The late Olanya reportedly run a string of business in Kitgum including money lending. It is unclear as yet whether his business could have been the reason for his murder. But police said yesterday that they are investigating that possibility.

Kitgum district police commander, Jackson Baryampika, told Acholi Times this afternoon that the Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura is in Kitgum to hold meetings with district security officials and pay a visit to the home of the late Tonny Olanya who was killed Tuesday night at around 8:30pm, according to police.

Three people have been shot dead in recent months in Kitgum. They now include Tony Olanya, Grace Ageno, the woman councilor for Greenland Parish in Pager, Kitgum municipality and Christine Omoya, 56, the wife of Reverend Canon Lamtom Omoya. Mrs. Omoya was cut to death using a machete by unknown people armed with guns and machete.

There is public outrage in Kitgum with some accusing security officials of incompetence.
