Gulu municiplaity MP Lyandro Komakech wants police to deploy its feared Flying Squad to check on the rise of crime in Gulu

Gulu Municipality Member of Parliament Lyandro Komakech wants the intervention of the Flying Squad, a police unit renowned for its crackdown on violent crime to curb the rise of crime in Gulu.

The Flying Squad is equally infamous for its alleged gross violation of human rights.

Mr Komakech said this  on Tuesday in an interview with Acholi Times.

The calls by MP come hot on the heels of the murder of the Gulu Deputy Town Clerk, John Oola.

Oola was murdered by suspected thugs at around midnight on Saturday morning as he dropped home a lady identified as Alice Kipwola. Kipwola has been detained by police to aid investigations.

The late Oola was murdered at Kanyagoga parish in Bardege Division, a Gulu town suburb.

Komakech said he had had a phone discussion with police Chief Gen Kale Kayihura over the rise in crime in Gulu where several people have been hit by  the thugs commonly known as ”Iron Bar Hitmen.” They hit with their unsuspecting victims on the head with blunt objects.

It is unclear who the thugs but they have been attacking people on and off either late in the night or early in the morning since last year.

The MP challenged the police to take immediate action to curb the attacks.

A district security committee meeting was yesterday held in Gulu to discuss the increasing crime rate.

The Gulu district resident Commissioner (RDC) Okot Santos Lapolo has asked residents in Gulu municipality to be mindful of their security by avoiding late night movements.
