Gulu district Speaker John Okwonga is in trouble over alleged defilement of his 14- year old niece which consequently resulted into a pregnancy.

A case of defilement was reported against Okwonga at Gulu Central Police Station under CRB 762/2019.

The case was reported on May 30 by Joan Acen, mother of the alleged victim.

Acen is the widow of the Okwonga’s late brother who passed on in 2015.

The victim and her mother reportedly lived under Okwonga’s care   from 2015 to 2016 when they left.

Okwonga confirmed to this writer on Thursday last week that he voluntarily recorded a statement at Gulu Central Police and was released on bail.

Christopher Okello, an uncle to the victim said the alleged defilement took place when the 14- year old went to Okwonga’s house.

In her statement to police, Acen, the mother of the victim claims she was defiled in March this year in Laroo Division and consequently got pregnant.

The incident, Acen said, happened during a party at the Gulu Speaker’s home.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa river region police spokesperson said the case against the Gulu Speaker is before the Resident States Attorney for advice.

Okwonga represents Unyama Sub County in the Gulu district local government council. This is his second term in office. Between 2006 to 2011 he was a member of the district executive committee.
