The Gulu Chief Magistrate’s Court has charged two suspects with robbery of a motorbike and the murder a Boda-boda motorcycle taxi rider.

Mr Rogers Kyeyune, 25, and Mr Fred Kakooza alias Nyabende, 22, all employees of Life Loaf Bakery in Layibi division in Gulu Municipality, had appeared before Mr Deogratius Ssejemba on Wednesday morning after they were arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of Mr Denis Nyeko.

Chief Magistrate Ssejemba read the two charges and asked them not to enter any plea since the offences they are charged with are of capital nature and are beyond the jurisdiction of the lower courts.

Mr William Bayo, the State Prosecutor told court that the inquiry into the case is still incomplete and later asked for an adjournment to allow time for more investigations to be carried out.

The Chief Magistrate accordingly remanded the pair to Gulu Central Government Prisons until October 26, 2016 when they will be expected to reappear before the same court.

Mr Nyeko, 35, was found dead on the night of Thursday, September 18, 2015 along Lajwartek road which connects Koro Lajwartek to the Gulu-Kampala Highway, just 2KMs from Gulu town.

Police say there were signs of violence on the body of the deceased, a sign that he was violently killed on that fateful night.

A postmortem report indicated that the deceased was hit on the back of the head with a blunt object before being strangled.

Mr Martin Okoyo, the Gulu District Police Commander (DPC) told journalists in his office on Tuesday morning that the pair in their statement said they hired Nyeko from Gulu town with a promise to give him a goo pay before killing him.

Okoyo noted that the suspects’ initial intention was to rob the motorbike but they eventually they ended up killing the Boda-boda taxi operator in the process.

The duo says they asked their victim to branch off the Gulu- Kampala Highway before attacking him.

On arrest, Kyeyune, a resident of Nakasongola district informed police about his accomplice Kakooza who was later arrested in Gulu town.

Kyeyune was arrested after he was found in possession of the stolen red Bajaj Boxer registration number UEB 490M in Byeyale, 50 miles from the scene of crime.

They both admitted to killing Nyeko.

Museveni once said an eye for an eye! these two young men must be put to death immediately. It is the only way to deter repeated evil acts of this nature. Any softer way in dealing with such evil is a promotion for re-occurance of similar evil.
