Aswa region police spokesman Jimmy Patrick Okema  revealed the killing of unidentified attacker from South Sudan.

Police has shot and killed a gunman believed to be of South Sudanese national in a gun fight in Lamwo district.

Police say the gunman was shot dead  on Sunday in Lawiyadul parish in Madi Opei, an area bordering South Sudan.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa Region Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident to Acholi Times  on Monday, and said three other attackers fled towards the South Sudan border.

Okema said an SMG rifle No. 6173 was recovered from the attackers after a the gunfight.

Police say they responded to the incident after a South Sudan national identified as Paul Lukong was robbed off  1,400 South Sudanese pounds. Lukong was travelling with his wife on a motorbike when he was stopped and robbed. Lukong later reported the case to Apiriti Police Post.

According to Okema, the gunmen, four in number engaged in gun battle with police leading to the death of one of them who remains unidentified.

Police say the attackers fired first before the police responded.

The incident took place on Sunday at around 11:50AM along Seretenya road in Lupala, which is in Madi Opei Sub County, some 100 meters inside Uganda.

The body of the dead attacker was handed over on Monday to the South Sudan police.

Though police say the man was wearing a uniform, it is not clear whether the gunman was wearing a South Sudan police or military attire.

The motive of the attackers remains unclear although the area is known to be volatile. Armed men from South Sudan have in the past raided villages inside Uganda and stolen livestock.
