Christopher Acire, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Gulu Municipality has quit his constituency seat and  has instead expressed interest to run against Aswa County MP Reagan Okumu.

In April this year, Acire announced he was tired of politics and would not seek re-election in 2016.

However on Sunday during his weekly  show on a local station that he owns, Acire declared his interest in the Aswa County.

Acire and Okumu belong to the main opposition party FDC, although the two have had a rocky relationship for the last three years.

Acire says Okumu has been Aswa Member of Parliament since 1996 yet he has not brought any development in his constituency.

Acire says as Member of Parliament for Aswa, he will bring fresh leadership in  the area.

Acire who has been MP for Gulu municipality for nearly five years has been accused of incompetence, hardly making any contribution to discussions in parliament.

The Gulu municipality MP says he will run as an independent if cheated in the FDC primary elections.

Okumu has dismissed Acire’s accusations against him, saying  the Gulu Municipality MP has failed to effectively represent his people.

Okumu accuses Acire of failure to speak on the floor of parliament since he was elected MP in 2011. This, the Aswa County MP says is evidence that Acire  is not a competent leader.

The FDC Gulu party Spokesperson, Kelly Komakech in an interview on Monday said both Acire and Okumu have picked nomination forms for Aswa. The FDC primaries  is slated for this month.

The Forum for Democratic Change party (FDC) has seemingly left the race for Gulu Municipality parliamentary seat to Democratic Party president Norbert Mao after no aspirant from the party picked forms to participate in the party primaries.
