Residents of Puranga Sub County in Pader district and Aromo Sub County in Lira district plan a peaceful demonstration on Tuesday to protest the delay in construction of the Aswa bridge.

The bridge which connects Pader and Lira districts was brought down two months ago by a heavily-laden lorry.

Simon Lapoti Nono a resident Puranga Sub County who will lead the team from Pader district says their peaceful demonstration will involve pitching camp on Tuesday (tomorrow) on the banks of the river until the bridge is repaired.

“We have procured papyrus mats to facilitate our stay there during the nights and we shall pitch camp there until the bridge is repaired,” Lapoti said.

Lapoti said as a result of the broken bridge one resident of Puranga drowned while trying to cross the river. Recently a boat carrying 16 people capsized in the river leading to loss of merchandize and property including motorcycles which have never been recovered.

George Canopwonya, a resident of Rackoko in Awere Sub County says that the despite appeals to government to have the bridge repaired, the government has not heeded to the cry of the people.

The residents want government to intervene in improvising a temporally Bridge or an alternative transport means to help commuters cross the river while the main bridge linking Lira and Pader, Agago, Kitgum, and Lamwo districts is rebuilt.
