The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) 5th division has got a new commander. The 5th division covers Agago, Kitgum, Lamwo and 11 other districts.

The new commander, Brig Sam Kavuma had in June 2012 handed over to Brigadier Sam Kawaga when he (Kavuma) was deployed in Southern Sudan, then the Central Africa Republic (CAR) and eventually Somalia before being deployed to the 5th division again.

Kavuma returned to Uganda last week.

Leaders in Pader and Agago have welcomed Kavuma’s redeployment in Pader.

During the handover ceremony held on Monday at Acholpii army barracks in Pader district, Agago district Resident District Commissioner, Charles Ray Okwir said commanded the outgoing commander, Brigadier Kawaga saying he had done a good job.

Okwir who spoke on behalf of other RDCs in the region added that Brigadier Kavuma will easily pick up from where the latter stopped since he was in the region before and pledged his [Okwir] and that of other leaders in districts that fall under the 5th division.

Lamwo LCV chairman, Mathew Ocen Akiya who was also present at the handover ceremony said Kavuma’s return is a blessing to the Acholi people. Akiya described the new commander as a simple, social and a down to earth person, adding that working with him will not be a problem.

Pader district LCV chairman, Alfred Akena also praised Kavuma saying his return is good for the development and expansion of facilities like education and health in Acholpii army barracks.

Brigadier Kavuma comes at a time when the region is preparing for elections in 2016. He condemned politics based on tribalism and sentiments, saying such politicians promote chaos in communities.

Brigadier Kavuma appealed to locals in Acholi, Lango and Karamoja sub region to vote for leaders that will ensure peace and stability in the country.

The 5th division comprises 8 districts in Lango Sub region, 4 in Acholi Sub region and 3 in Karamoja.
