Police officers have been deployed at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital where the driver of the ill-fated vehicle which claimed the life of a former Health Minister and three members of his family is currently receiving medical treatment.
Denis Gakumba, has been put under police surveillance since Saturday last week after the Super Custom van, Reg. No. UAU 249K that he was driving overturned several times after it’s front right tyre burst. Gakumba was driving the vehicle which was hired by the Obonyo family from Kampala. He is currently recovering from Gulu Referral Hospital where he was rushed for treatment after the accident.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa Region Police Spokesperson said on Monday that the police are meant to prevent Gakumba from slipping out of the hospital but also to protect him. The police spokesman did not say from what Gakumba is being protected. But he said Gakumba will be guarded for as long as the police thinks necessary.
Dr Henry Benjamin Obonyo, a former minister in the short-lived government of Tito Okello Lutwa died in car crash at St Thomas More, about 32 kilometres south of Gulu Town. He was in Kampala on his way to his village in Madi Opei in Lamwo district.
The accident also claimed the life of his wife Kevin Obonyo, their two daughters while two of their grandchildren were injured and are getting treatment at Kampala International hospital in Kampala.
The chairperson Madi-Opei community in Gulu District, Mr Esau Langoya, expressed deep shock over the death of Dr Obonyo and his family. The late Dr Obonyo will be buried at a yet-to-be named date at Poyamo village in Madi Opei sub county , Lamwo district
