Police say suspected South Sudanese cattle rustlers have killed a 38-year-old man in Kitgum district.

The decease has been identified as Celestino Acire, a resident of Goona village, Kiteny parish in Orom Sub County.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa region Police Spokesperson said the incident happened on Monday and that the deceased was shot twice with a gun.

According to Okema, the raiders struck at around midnight before fleeing the scene.

Okema says police visited the scene of the crime and recovered cartridges suspected to have been discharged from the gun used by the cattle rustlers.

Armed cattle rustlers from South Sudan regularly cross into Uganda to raid cattle in villages on the Uganda side of the border. Kitgum and Lamwo are the most affected because of their proximity to South Sudan.

Meanwhile Police in Kitgum district are holding four men in connection with the murder of a 40- year-old man.

Police say Richard Odong, a resident of Ateng village, Labongo Akung Sub County in Kitgum district died after he was attacked by the suspects.

Three of the suspects have been identified by police as Bosco Acire, Oyoo Lutoya  and Kenneth Akena.

Odong died on Wednesday last week after he succumbed to his injuries after he was attacked at around 10 pm.

According to police, the deceased was killed in what appears to have been a land wrangle.

Okema says they suspect that Odong was beaten by the four men and others who are still at large.
