Aswa region police spokesman Jimmy Okema confirmed the arrest of Komagum

Police in Gulu are holding a man on allegation that he raped a 95-year-old woman.

Steven Komagum, 32, is being held at Gulu Central Police Station. He is alleged to have raped the 95- year old on the wee hours of Monday morning.

Komagum was arrested shortly after the alleged crime when the woman sneaked out and called one of her sons as the suspect snored away in the old woman’s house.

The suspect had been released on March 11 by the Gulu High Court  after prosecution failed to prove a case of aggravated robbery against him. It had been alleged that Komagum robbed a Bajaj motorcycle in May 2014 along the Gulu-Moroto road.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa region Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) confirmed the re-arrest of Komagum on rape charges on Wednesday describing his alleged raping of a 95 year old  as unfortunate.

Okema said preliminary investigation by police shows that Komagum broke into the house of the old woman in Kirombe parish, Layibi division, Gulu Municipality  with the intention of stealing but instead chose to sexually assault the woman.

Police believe that Komagum is a member of a criminal gang which has been terrorizing the residents of Gulu town between April and May 2014.
