Police in Gulu is holding a 59-year-old primary school teacher for allegedly raping an elderly woman.
Police say Jackson Mwaka, a teacher of Atyang Primary School in Alero Sub County in Nwoya District alleged raped the 82-year-old woman on April 9, this year at around 10 pm.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa Region Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident and said Mwaka is already in police custody as investigation into the matter continues.
Okema told journalists in Gulu on Monday that the teacher was arrested on Sunday after the victim registered a case with police.
Okema says Mwaka had offered himself to escort the victim to her home after a heavy evening downpour but he ended up raping her.
According to Okema, the elderly woman had sheltered herself in a nearby house near Onwange trading center after selling some commodities in a nearby market.
Mwaka is being held at Lacor Police Post as investigation into the matter continues.
Medical examination indicates that the old woman was sexually abused, according to police.
Police say Mwaka was seen drinking in a local drinking joint before the rape.
This is the second rape incident in Acholi sub region in which the victim is a vulnerable old woman.
