Gulu high court will tomorrow make a ruling on an election petition filed by Simon Toolit Akecha in which he accuses the Deputy Speaker of parliament Jacob Oulanyah for rigging in the February Omoro parliamentary elections.
Mbarara resident High Court Judge Justice David Matovu who heard election petitions in the Acholi sub region set June 8 as the date for delivering his judgement on the Toolit petition.
Toolit, who lost in the February 18, in the Omoro County Parliamentary election race to Oulanyah, filed the petition before the Gulu High Court seeking for the nullification of the election results on grounds that his opponent allegedly connived with the Electoral Commission (EC) to cheat him of victory.
Toolit described the whole process as flawed and questioned why some of the ballot boxes and other election materials were kept in a saloon instead of the gazetted places.
The contested polling stations include Lagwedola, Lalogi headquarters A-A, B-Z,Mmin jaa p7, Tee cwa, Loyoajwanga A-A, Adobo p7, Corner lakoya, Aawali wang tangi.
Toolit’s lawyers also argued that the election was conducted in a manner contrary to the principles laid down in the parliamentary election act.
On that ground, Toolit is demanding for cancellation of Oulanyah as the winner of the hotly contested election and wants the court to compel the EC to conduct fresh election.
Toolit’s lawyers are also questioning why Oulanyah was declared winner of the Omoro MP seat without election result figures being announced.
The EC declared Oulanyah winner of the election with 8,218 votes against Toolit’s 6,823.
