Gulu chief magistrate’s court on Monday granted a non-cash bail of 300,000 shillings for five students of Gulu University charged with arson.

Prosecution led by State Attorney Bayo William told court that on 11 May, 2016, Okot Samuel, Olal Jimmy, Kusima Gorreti, Ogwal Ambrose, Akello Kedress and others, all third year students of Faculty of Education willfully and unlawfully set ablaze the Gulu University Multi-Purpose students hall.

All the five students pleaded not guilty to the offense and immediately they applied for bail through their lawyer Geoffrey Anyuru Geoffrey of Odongo and Company advocate of Odongo & Co advocates. Advocate Anyuru asked for bail for his clients arguing that since their case is still under investigation and yet the students are supposed to begin sitting for their examinations today.

The chief magistrate adjourned the case until 15th July 2016 and granted the students a non- cash bail of Ush300, 000 non cash bail each.

Mukembo Robert, the Gulu University Guild president who was in court told Acholi Times that he is happy with the court’s decision to grant the students bail because it will allow them to sit for their examinations.

Amelia Kiggundu, the Gulu University senior Public relations officer said that the students granted bail by court will be allowed to sit their examination only if they have cleared their tuition to zero balance including the penalty fee of Ush 200,000 towards the rehabilitation of the burnt main hall.
