Uganda’s Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda is expected to visit the multi-billion shillings Attiak Sugar Factory, in Gem village, Attiak Sub County in Amuru district at the end of this week, Acholi Times understands.

On his way to Amuru, Dr Rugunda will also visit  the multi billion dollar construction o f Karuma dam on the River Nile.

In Amuru, the Prime Minister  will meet local local leaders  to discuss development in post conflict northern Uganda.

Gilbert Olanya, the Kilak South County, Member of Parliament (MP) said on Wednesday that he received a phone call from the Prime Minister’s office  informing him about Dr Rugunda’s visit.

According to MP Olanya, the Prime Minister will visit Elegu Border Town and road construction projects  along the Gulu- Nimule road which is being undertaken by Chinese firms before proceeding to visit Attiak Sugar factory.

The Amuru legislator welcomed the visit  of the Prime MInister saying  they[leaders] will use the opportunity to demystify the myth that they are  opposed to development.

Olanya explained that for a long time, they (Acholi leaders ) have been accused of frustrating investments by inciting communities not to offer land for putting up developments.

The Attiak sugar factory which employ 1,500 locals is expected to start full production by July 2017, according to Dr. Amina Hersi Morghe, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Horyal Investment Holding Company Limited, the company which owns the factory.

Speaking in March this year at the Sugar Factory site in Attiak Sub County, Dr Amina said  once they start full production in the middle of next year, they expect to produce around 50,000 metric tons annually. She said her company  has its eyes set on the South Sudan market besides meeting the domestic demand for sugar in Uganda.
