Police in in Gulu have arrested a private security guard who allegedly shot and killed a Gulu University lecturer in Gulu town Sunday evening.

According to police, Patrick Okeny, 28, shot at close range and fatally wounded Isaiah Okidi who teaches at Gulu University’s Kitgum branch.

Okidi died while being rushed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, only a short distance away from where he was shot.

Okeny, a security guard attached to SGA, a local security firm was at the time of the shooting guarding Dfcu Bank Gulu Branch.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa Region Police spokesman said police recovered a gun No. SAR UG POL 1512E 106, which is suspected to have been used in the shooting.

The suspect in the murder is already in police custody for questioning. Another security guard who witnessed the shooting has also been arrested by police to help with investigation.

The police also recovered four bullets from the gun.

The late Okidi had reportedly parked his motorbike along Dr Corti Lucille road (opposite Dfcu bank) and wanted to ride away, some accounts say, when he was confronted by the guard who wanted to know whether the motorcycle belonged to Okidi.

Eye witnesses say the security guard tasked Okidi to explain if the numberless motorcycle was his.

Okidi, according to eyewitnesses insisted that itis his motorbike but shortly a shot rang out and Okidi lay on the ground with blood oozing out of his body.

The security guard fled the shooting after the shooting but was shortly arrested by police who rushed to the scene.

Okidi had reportedly just withdrawn money from Dfcu bank ATM but other accounts say he had picked money from a nearby MTN mobile money agent opposite the bank.

Police in Gulu say it is unclear to them at this stage whether Okidi had withdrawn money from the Dfcu bank or mobile money agent.

‘‘It is something we are investigating. We shall record a statement from the mobile money agent,’’ said Aswa region police spokesman Okema.

Okidi’s body is lying at the Gulu Regional Hospital mortuary awaiting a post mortem.

He must have been paid to shot the lecturer. He should never work as a security guard again. Dano myero gudok lutic yit pien nek mogo atata ma kiyubo lapiny-lapiny me gengngo dongo lobo i Acoli ni mito ki langat man yite obed atera.
