Rwot David Onen Acana II, the Paramount Chief of Acholi has condemned the increasing cases of unexplained killings of Gulu municipality residents.

In a press statement released on Thursday last week, the Acholi Chief condemned the killings describing it as an atrocious act.

“I have noted with serious concern the current spate of murders taking in and around Gulu municipality. According to the information I have, this is being perpetuated by a band of ‘Iron Bar’ hit men who waylay unsuspecting individuals in the night and commits their atrocious acts,” the statement read in part.

The Rwot noted that it is very unfortunate that it is happening in Acholi sub region.

“As Acholi, we respect the sanctity of life and condemn all acts that violate this. I implore the perpetrators of this to stop violating people’s rights to life and for them to seek better alternative in life,” he adds.

Rwot Acana tasked security agencies to protect the local population against such gruesome attacks as well as their property.

The cultural institution also pledged to ensure that action is taken so as to stop the current wave of crime.

Since September this year, at least 10 people have been killed in cold blood with majority of the victims murdered in Kitgum and Gulu districts.

The latest victim of such killing was Wellborn Kilama, 35, a boda boda taxi operator whose throat was slit by his attackers last week.

Kilama’s lifeless body was found lying along Eden Road in Senior Quarters in Laroo Division on the morning of Thursday.

Eden road lies just 100 meters from Gulu main police station.

Police blame the killings on organized criminals who are armed with AK47 assault rifles illegally acquired from the black-market from volatile South Sudan.

A man identified as Charles Opiyo, was arrested by police on Thursday last week in connection with the murder Mr Kilama.

Opiyo, a resident of Layibi Division in Gulu Municipality was found in possession of machetes, army uniforms and rolls of marijuana.

The Aswa Region Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) said police also recovered a blood stained dress in the home of Opiyo.

Police say they will take the cloth found in possession of the suspect to police analytical laboratory in Kampala and subject it to forensic tests.

Thomas Oboma, the Chairperson Gulu District Boda Boda Motorcycle Association called on police to do all it can to bring suspects in the murder of Kilama to book.

There are many death happening around the region second time round and we should not be quick to blame our neighboring brothers because there has been denial of killings during insurgencies even if witnesses come out to testify they are killed , mass killings has been experienced under this regime though they denied it ended being witness in the broad day light . It maybe the right time we humble ourselves and give our youths guidance and direction how to be economically independent as this government won’t create for them jobs . They can themselves begin to create jobs for others, yes we can.
