A suspected poacher in Purongo Sub County in Nwoya district has voluntarily handed over a gun to local authorities after police mounted pressure on him.

David Wokorach handed over a gun in his possession to Fredrick Okecha, the area district Councilor who in turn handed it over to the police.

Police however did not divulge any details on how Wokorach acquired the gun.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa Region police spokesman confirmed that police had received the gun with 29 rounds of ammunitions.

Okema explained that the gun serial number UG.UPDF 4810075 was handed over to police on Saturday last week.

Okema said police suspects that Wokorach was using the weapon for poaching elephants inside Murchison Falls National Game Park. He however said police can’t rule out that the gun could have also been used for robbery.

The police spokesman commended Wokorach for turning in the gun and asked others who are in possession of illegal weapon to hand it over voluntarily.

Wokorach may escape prosecution since Nwoya District Security Committee offered amnesty to those with illegal gun.
