A police officer attached to the Field Force Unit [FFU] in Pader district on Thursday night committed suicide by shooting himself, police has said.

The reason for the suicide is yet unknown.

Police Constable Patrick Oloya 30 reportedly locked himself in his house [uniport] in the Barracks at night and shot his head using his AK47 assault rifle. He died instantly.

Aswa Region Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident to Acholi Times in a telephone interview on Friday describing the incident as unfortunate.

Mr Okema said the bullet shattered Oloya’s head beyond recognition.

The police spokesman added that the deceased was staying alone at the time of the incident. His wife and children in the village also in Pader.

“It’s unfortunate that we have lost a police officer who was polite and hard working. During his working days, he never exhibited any violent behaviors and even on the fateful evening, he never showed signs of frustration,” Mr Okema said.

He advised other police officers to approach their superiors for counseling in cases they have burning instead of taking their life.

A postmortem was carried on the deceased his body was handed over to relatives for burial, the police spokesman said.

Suicide by police officers in northern Uganda is not uncommon.

In December 2013, Sgt. Geoffrey Obagot, the officer in charge of Paicho Sub County  in Gulu district shot himself in the head and died instantly.

In January 2014, a police constable, Sunday Kidega, 33 attached to Gulu Central Police Station also committed suicide by shooting himself.
