A total of 1,372 students will tomorrow, Saturday, graduate from Gulu University in various disciplines, according to the University’s Deputy Spokesperson, Mr Mahmoud Khalid.

Tomorrow’s graduation will be the 12th since the institution opened its doors in Northern Uganda in 2002.

Out of the 1,372 students, two will be awarded with Honorary PHDs, three with PHDs, 57 with Master Degrees, 66 with Post graduate Diplomas, 64 with undergraduate certificates. While 93 others will be awarded with undergraduate diploma and 1,087 will receive undergraduate degrees.

Speaking to Acholi Times in an interview on Friday, Mr Khalid said 554 [40.7 percent] of those students graduating are female while 814 [59.3 percent] are male. The Gulu University Spokesman said this number is slightly higher than those who graduated in 2016.

He however said a total of 14 students all from the faculty of Education and Humanities will not graduate pending investigation by the University council. According to Mr Khalid, the students are accused of masterminding a strike at the university in May last year that resulted in the burning of the University’s multi-purpose hall.

The students staged the strike to protest delays by the University’s administration to release their end of semester two examination results.

The Minister for Education and Sports Ms Janet Museveni is expected to be the guest of honor at the colorful graduation ceremony.

Last year, a total of 1,359 students from the University graduated with certificates, Diploma, under graduate degrees, Master degrees, and PHD’s.
