Police in Amuru district has charged 18 students of St. Mary`s College Lacor in Amuru district with malicious damage of property.

The students are suspected to have vandalized school property on Friday during a violent strike leading to destruction of property at the school located about 10kms along the Gulu-Atiak- Nimule road.

The 18 students were arrested Friday night.

Among the property they are suspected to have destroyed was classroom blocks, the administration block, window panes, laboratory equipment, computers, the school perimeter fence and furniture, among others.

The violence is said to have started from the boys` dormitory at around 10:00pm on Friday when Joel Ocen, a teacher in the school attempted to conduct an impromptu roll call to identify students who sneaked outside for booze and a disco dance at Akurukwe centre in Lacor parish.

The Aswa River Region Police Public Relations Officer Patrick Jimmy Okema said police preferred a charge of malicious damages against the students whose files will soon be ready for sanctioning by the Resident States Attorney.

According to Okema the students are still being detained at the Awere police outpost as police conducts investigations on the matter.

The school has in the meant time been closed by the Amuru district inspector of schools Dominic Otto. Mr Otto said the school will be re-opened after meetings with district leaders, the school administration and members of the Parent` Teachers Association.

Similarly police in Gulu has also charged four students of Sir Samuel Baker School in Gulu town with malicious damage following a Thursday night students` violent strike. The students pelted the school administration block, head teacher`s office, teachers` houses, dining hall with stones.  They also destroyed property of the community around the school.

The Students are suffering the Destruction of Culture and Values System. Our deep rooted and rich Civilization, values system and family structure have all been destroyed while the Students were in the Camps. The behavior will never be the same for Social,Educational,Discipline , Cultural effectiveness and efficiency is slowly being absorb by Students. We must improve on Rules not like the Catholic Missionary Schools in the 1960s.It is not possible from Students who came from a background of 20 years in the Camps Lives.Something must be done beyond the students frustrations. They have been deliberately denied the opportunity to follow the footsteps of their role-models and pioneers.
