Unknown thugs Monday morning broke into the offices of the German Development Cooperation [GIZ] in Gulu Municipality and vandalized property worth millions of shillings, police in Gulu have said.
The thugs’ reportedly gained access to the premises located in Iriaga West sub-ward, Iriaga parish Laroo Division after beating two security guards attached to Security Group Africa (SGA) who were manning the facility.
The security Guards identified as David Ayela 27 sustained injuries on both legs while Francis Odong was hit on the head in the attack that happened at about 2 am Monday morning.
The GIZ offices is located along the Gulu- Kitgum road. The injured guards were briefly admitted at Victory Medical Center in Gulu town before being discharged.
The Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson Jimmy Patrick Okema told Acholi Times that the thugs beat up the security guards smashed windscreens of six vehicles that were packed in the premises.
The cars vandalized included two Nisan Patrol cars registration UBB 711K and UBB 005Q, a Toyota Hilux registration number UBB 683Y, Toyota Land Cruiser registration UBB 063H and Toyota Land Cruiser Prado UBB 682Y and a Toyota double Cabin Pick UP.
Mr Okema said the thugs also destroyed several office doors and broke up a safe. Police hasn’t yet established whether money or any valuables was stolen from the safe.
The police spokesman said that the scene of crime has been cordoned it off pending reinforcement of Forensic experts from Kampala.
Mr Okema said the case if being investigated under Gulu SD Ref: 16/27/1/2019.
GIZ programme office in Gulu was commissioned in June last year.
