Police in Amuru District are hunting for a retired UPDF Major on allegation of fueling a violent land conflict that left 52 grass thatched huts ablaze and eight herds of cattle looted.

Rtd Major Ferdinand Otim is accused of commanding his kinsmen on Sunday morning to raid Pali-Pali clan in Palukere East village in Atiak Sub County.

According to reports, the huts were burnt in revenge after Otim reportedly informed the Pali-Pali clan that his brother identified as George Obol, also a retired soldier, had been killed during a violent confrontation.

Police are also investigating reports that Otim went to the area while armed with a gun. The violence escalated forcing the army and police to deploy in the area.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa River Region Spokesperson said Major Otim is wanted by police for his alleged role in the violent conflict.

Okema said they suspect that the retired army officer instigated the fight that saw residents arm themselves with bow and arrow, machetes, spears and raid and loot the village of Palukere East.

He warned those suspected to have had a hand in the violent incident will face aggravated robbery and arson charges. So far, ten (10) suspects have been arrested in connection to the violent land wrangle. They are being detained at Atiak Police Post.

When contacted, the 4th Division Army Spokesperson, Major Caesar Olweny said he was not aware of the incident. Major Olweny however said if Otim is found to have been involved in any kind of crime, he will have to face the law like any other ordinary citizen of Uganda.
