Sympathizers have raised at least fifteen million shillings to support 86-year-old Lucy Anek who was assaulted by her grandson in Omoro district.
The victim was seen in a widely shared video online being battered by his 30-year-old grandson, Brian Okello.
The incident happened from Amilobo Village in Patuda Parish Ongako Sub County Omoro district on Sunday 12th of April 2020.
Since then sympathizers and well-wishers created a WhatsApp group to rally support for the victim and later deposited their contributions through MTN Mobile Money to Flavia Teddy Okello, the Director Flama Medical Centre, Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, the Gulu district Chairperson and Doky Akello, a relative to the victim.
The Acholi in the diaspora also opened an account with Lloyds Bank, a British retail and commercial bank to raise funds for Anek`s health and well-being. They have also been holding virtual meetings through social media platforms to boost the fundraising drives.
Teddy Flavia Okello disclosed that by Wednesday evening, 15 million shillings had been raised both locally and internationally.
She explained that a committee constituted locally will use twelve million seven hundred thousand shillings of the total money raised to construct a two roomed self-contained house with a water tank and solar light for the victim at her home in Omoro.
Construction works undertaken by Palco Construction and General Enterprise Limited started last week under the supervision of Omoro district and will last two weeks.
Doky Akello, among the people spearheading the fundraising drive, said that they swung into action to help Anek who had suffered persistent brutality from her grandson.
Anek is currently at Flama Medical Centre in Gulu meanwhile Okello has been remanded to Gulu Central Prisons on charges of torture and attempted murder.
