Two students of St Joseph`s College Layibi School in Gulu City have been shot dead and another critically injured in a suspected robbery at a neighboring school.
The deceased are Brian Rubangakene who died on spot and Emmanuel Okeny who succumbed to injuries on Thursday morning.
Kenneth Rubangakene sustained injuries on his legs and has been rushed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital where he is receiving treatment. The victims are all Senior Four students of the school.
They were shot by security guards attached to Exposs Security Group on Wednesday night trying to gain access to a neighboring Bright Valley Girls Primary and Secondary Schools located in Techo Parish, Bardege-Layibi division which is about one kilometer away from St Joseph`s College Layibi.
Moses Ogwang, the Community Liaison Officer (CLO) at Gulu Central Police Station confirmed the incidence on Thursday morning.
Ogwang explained that the students numbering over ten jumped over the school`s wall fence through the backyard at around 9:30 pm and headed towards the school`s store section but their presence was noticed by the security guards who were on watch.
The guards reportedly opened fire at the students killing one instantly and injuring two others while others fled for dear lives.
He said seven others believed to have been part of the intrusion have been arrested after returning back to the school and now locked at Gulu Central Police Station.
They are Jasper Ogenrwot, Gerald Ocakacon, Herbert Kakaum (S3), Brian Obol, Samuel Okello and Daniel Ogenrwot. The case is being investigated by Gulu Central Police Station under SD 32/16/03/2021.
Michael Obwona, the Techo Parish Gombolola Internal Security Officer (GISO) said that last month an unidentified person also tried to gain access into the school at night but escaped after the securities on guard shot at him.
