Pupils of Ajuri Primary School in Ayomlony village, Omoro County in Gulu are breathing a sigh of relief after prayers were held at the school to cleanse their school of repeated evil spirit attacks.

Ajuri Primary School which sits just 20Kms from Awere Hills where the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebel leaders, Joseph Kony used to draw his spiritual powers during the decade long war had the last of such attack in July 2013.

On that day, it was an ugly scene after fifteen pupils who were reported to be possessed by spirits went on rampage damaging school desks, steel doors and windows.

The pupils; all girls also attacked teachers, fellow pupils and the district education officials who responded to the situation.

Some of the girls were asking for forgiveness saying they are seeking vengeance on those who killed them.

Mr Julius Oryema, the Head teacher of the school said for close to two years, they have not registered any similar incident.

Oryema believes that the prayers played an important role in ridding ending the evil spirit attacks.

He expressed great relief saying everything is normal after the spirits that were disturbing the school were expelled.

The area LCII Chairperson, Mr Milton Omara says they are still seeking answers to what befell the school.

Schools in Acholi sub region especially those that were formerly battlefields between the government forces and LRA rebels are battling with suspected ghostly vengeance attacks after the end of the insurgency that forced close to two million into the internally displaced persons camps.

Though Elders in Acholi attribute it to the mass killings which left many bodies without decent burials, mental health experts link it to trauma.

Prof Emilio Ovuga, a psychiatrist at Gulu University Faculty of Medicine, says residents are still traumatised as a result of what they witnessed during the war.

According to Prof Emilio, most patients are seeking services from traditional healers because of lack of information and access to modern services which could treat their mental condition which he described as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
