A 21 year old man in Peya village, Ongako Sub County in Gulu district decided to commit suicide rather than live with the shame of being caught in uncompromising situation with his niece.

Mr Geoffrey Ocitti is reported to have ingested a pesticide to end his life.

It is alleged that he was caught in the act by his unidentified wife playing with one of the daughters to his late brother on Friday afternoon.

According to Local Council officials in the area, after Ocitti was caught committing incest with his niece, he rushed and took the chemical in shame.

He was later taken to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor around 2PM but attempts by medical workers to save his life were futile since some his vital organs had already failed due to the highly toxic chemical.

Ocitti was buried on Sunday at his ancestral home at Peya village, Onyona parish, Ongako.

Mr Emmanuel Okumuluru, the area LC III Chairperson described the incident as tragic and asked youth to engage themselves in productive activities rather than inviting trouble into their lives.

“The youth have resorted to gambling, drug abuse and alcoholism instead of investing their energy in income generating activities,” He said.

He noted that some of the youth who are now parents have failed to provide support to members of their own families since they are not engaged in productive work.

The Ongako LC III asked the government to sensitize the affected communities so as to eradicate the increasing cases of suicide in the former war affected region.

Ocitti is the second suicide person to kill self after ingesting agro chemicals in less than two weeks.

In June, residents learnt about the tragic death of Mr Christopher Okumu who lost his property after playing a game of cards.
