Gulu district athletic team failed to retain the trophy for the Uganda Secondary School Athletics (USSA)   despite hosting the games.

The district came third with 177 points after Mukono saw Butambala district lift the trophy for the overall best team after securing 231 points in the one week event.

Mukono district which came second in the national tournament managed to collect 203 points.

Meanwhile Kitgum was 4th with 154 points.

It was heartbreaking for a multitude of home fans that turned up to cheer the home team with hope to morale boost them.

However, their efforts went down to waste after Butambala was crowned Champion for the 2015 version of the event.

The disappointment could be seen on the faces of the Mr Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, the LCV Chairman and Mr Andrew Moses Awany, the acting Resident District Commissioner (RDC).

After 20 minutes of the event ending officially, police anti riot unit crowned it with tear gas after they spotted a group of hooligans trying to cause disorder.

Gulu had a poor start after some of the athletes perform badly in short events.

Despite the loss, Mapenduzi thanked residents of Gulu for their hospitality and urged the Ministry of Education and Sports to repair Pece War Memorial Stadium which hosted the event.

The District Chairman also noted that with a 30,000 capacity, the facility can host regional event in the future.

Mr Abdallah Muhamad, the team coach for Butambala district said that they deserved to win because they prepared for it.

“Our athletes trained a lot and were therefore prepared for the event,” He said.

Over 40 schools participated in the championship that is held annually.
