In its quest for a city status, Gulu Municipality has extended its boundary by 5.2 square kilometers eating up parts of nearby Sub Counties.
This follows the 8th Council resolution which approved the extension of the boundaries to pave way for the creation of the city.
So far, Gulu Municipality has extended its boundaries by a radius of eight kilometers annexing the sub counties of Ongako, Unyama, Koro and Bungatira.
However, only parishes such as Alokolum and Patuda in Ongako Sub County and Pageya and Acoyo in Koro Sub County were affected.
Meanwhile, Unyama Sub County lost parts of Pakwelo and Unyama parishes in the Gulu Municipality city bid.
In 1971 when former President Idi Amin elevated Gulu Town Council to a Municipality status, its boundary was 8.5 square kilometers.
As one of the requirements to become a city, a Municipal Council should have a population of 500,000 residents.
But the 2013 Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBoS) puts the figures at 250,000.
Mr Adolf Mwesigye, the Minister for Local Government is expected to table the list of six municipalities biding for city status before Parliament this week for approval after Cabinet gave it a nod.
In August, Cabinet unanimously approved the creation of Mbarara, Fort Portal, Gulu, Arua, Jinja, and Mbale into city status.
The six municipalities now await a Parliamentary Resolution to make them cities which is expected to be done on Wednesday this week.
This means that if Parliament resolves to approve these six municipalities as cities, the country will now boast of seven cities.
Currently, Uganda has only Kampala as a city.
Mr Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, the Gulu District LCV Chairperson says he is very confident that Gulu Municipality will become a city.
Mr George Labeja, the Gulu Municipal Council Mayor also expressed confidence saying “The council has met all the requirements set by the Local Government Ministry.”
