An American couple has challenged school girls in the Acholi sub region to embrace the study of the sciences.

Addressing the students of St Thomas Moore Minakulu in Bobi Sub County on Monday, Pastor Phill Bauman and his wife Beth Bauman  said that there is a wrong mentality among girls that they are naturally poor in the sciences.

Pastor Phill urged girls to challenge the boys  stating that girls are as  gifted as boys in the sciences. He cited the example of his wife,  a engineer working with a leading  American company.

The Bauman’s are from the United Church of Christ, Michigan in the United States. Since 2008, the couple has build dormitories, libraries and dining halls in secondary schools in Acholi have offered education sponsorship to dozens of disadvantaged in the region which is recovering from two-decades of a devastating war.

The Gulu district education officer, Vincent Ocheng Ocen, told the students that there is no scientific study to suggest a link between gender and performance in the sciences.

A report released by the Uganda National Examinations Board in May this year observed that girls have performed poorly in Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Mathematics compared to boys in the last three years. The report notes that in the 2012, 75.6 per of girls who sat for O-Level scored F9 in chemistry compared to 66.6 for boys.

Dr Saverio Pido, a research with the national examinations board attributed the high failure rate of the sciences among the girls to attitude, poor learning environment and a lack of laboratories.
