A 4- year old girl was on Sunday afternoon fatally injured in a car accident involving the Deputy Speaker of parliament Jacob Oulanyah.

The accident happened at 3 pm in Lakwana in Omoro County as Oulanyah was reportedly on his way to meet his constituents. Oulanyah represents Omoro County in the 9th parliament. He is seeking reelection as the NRM candidate for the same seat.

Aswa region police spokesperson Jimmy Okema told journalists in Gulu on Monday afternoon that the girl died while being rushed to hospital.

‘‘She died while being brought hospital to Gulu Referral hospital,’’ Okema told journalists in the weekly police press conference at the Northern Uganda Media Club.

The dead girl has been identified as Betty Akullu. By Monday afternoon her body was still at the Gulu Referral hospital mortuary, according to the police.

Moses Ochama, the driver of the car was arrested, but Okema said he was expected to be released on bond yesterday.

Police could not say whether the car involved in the accident was being used by Oulanyah or it was one of the cars in his convoy.

At the time of filing this report, the Deputy Speaker had not made a public statement on the accident.
