Residents of Lukome, Lagwiny parish, Bungatira Sub County in Gulu district are in grief after an elderly man died in a fire accident in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
Police say Victorio Ojok, said to be in his 70s was killed after the grass thatched house he was sleeping in caught fire.
James Asubu, the OC Crime at Gulu Central Police Station confirmed the incident and said Ojok’s house caught fire around 3 am today.
According to Asubu, preliminary investigation indicates that the deceased did not put off a candle he had been using before going to bed.
Asubu said deceased was disabled and was confined to a wheelchair.
His body was burnt beyond recognition since no one came to his rescue.
In November last year, two children perished after their house caught fire.
The children, all members of one family and residents of Forest Ward in Laroo Division, Gulu Municipality were aged four and eight years
Police attributes the increasing cases of fire accidents to use of candle and storing inflamable liquids such as petrol in poorly sealed containers.
